François Ozon, Le Temps qui reste/Time to Leave
(France, 2005)
Starring Melvil Poupaud, Jeanne Moreau, Valia Bruni Tedeschi

A young, gay photographer’s life is upended by news of a terminal cancer that leaves him only a few months to live.  Refusing chemotherapy, Romain struggles to come to terms with his failing health, while attempting (for the most part unsuccessfully) to reconcile himself with family, lovers and friends—from whom he keeps the truth.  Confiding only in his beloved grandmother (wonderfully played by New Wave star Jeanne Moreau), the young man’s waning life takes an unexpected turn after a fortuitous meeting with a waitress in a highway rest area café.  Director François Ozon’s (Swimming Pool, 8 Women, Under the Sand, Sitcom) most complex and subtle work to date.
